Jon Jones, fyrrverandi léttþunga- og þungavigtarmeistari UFC, hefur verið sýknaður af ákærum vegna atviks sem átti sér stað í febrúar 2025. Hann var ásakaður um að flýja vettvang eftir umferðarslys. Ákærurnar voru felldar niður af embætti opinberra saksóknara í New Mexico eftir að símtalaskrár hans studdu frásögn hans um að hann hefði aldrei verið á staðnum, heldur í heimahúsi sínu.
„After further investigation, the State has reason to believe the defendant’s alibi defense is credible, The State, therefore, dismisses the matter.“
Í opinberri yfirlýsingu þakkaði Jones saksóknaranum fyrir að hafa gengið hlutlægt frá rannsókninni. Hann sagðist hafa verið „sýknaður algjörlega“ og gagnrýndi skyndilegan dóm almennings, sem hann telur byggðan á fortíðarvandamálum, meðal annars tengdum aksturs- og ofbeldismálum.
„I want to begin by thanking the district attorney’s office for carefully reviewing the facts and ultimately vindicating me completely… I have always believed in the importance of truth and fairness, and I am grateful that the evidence spoke for itself. The simple fact is this: I was never there. I never even left my house that night, and all the evidence proved that.
„In this case, there was a rush to judgment before any real evidence was gathered. I understand that, in the court of public opinion, the allegations may have seemed believable, especially given my past mistakes. But by the time these claims were made public, I had just retired from competition, and that moment was stolen from me by someone who made false accusations to avoid a DWI and any real accountability.
„I sincerely hope that this individual is held responsible by Albuquerque’s law enforcement. They not only disrupted my retirement but also made our police department appear negligent in the process. It is deeply troubling that, in today’s world, a single false accusation can take so much away from someone before any evidence is even considered.“
Lögmaður Jones, Christopher Dodd, staðfesti að umrætt mál væri niðurfellt þar sem frásögn Jones hafði reynst trúverðugt. Hann gagnrýndi að upphaflegar ásakanir væru byggðar á röngum upplýsingum en sú frásögn tilheyrðu konu sem ætlaði að koma sér undan eigin DWI-refsingu (Driving While Intoxicated). Símtalaskrár styður frásögn Jones um fjarveru hans frá vettvangi slyssins.
Þrátt fyrir að hafa tilkynnt um lok bardagaferilisins í júní 2025 gaf Jones til kynna í yfirlýsingu sinni að hann væri opinn fyrir endurkomu og sérstaklega með tilliti til áætlaðs UFC-bardaga við Hvíta húsið þann 4. júlí 2026. Dan White hefur þó lýst vantrú á að það gerist, og fullyrt að líkurnar séu „A million to one“.
